  • STMicroelectronics' direct power line communication channel for the home will be used in Smart Meters developed by Gridspertise for the US market

• Empowering end customers to actively participate in the transformation of the energy market, promoting the integration of distributed renewable energy and the development of smart energy management systems

Gridspertise, a global power grid equipment manufacturer dedicated to supporting global power distribution system operators to accelerate the digitalization of power grids, and STMicroelectronics (ST), a world-leading semiconductor company serving multiple electronic applications, will be exhibiting at the 2023 American Power Transmission and Distribution Grid and Public Utilities Exhibition (DistribuTECH 2023) announced that the long-term cooperation in smart meter technology between the two parties has entered a new stage.

At the beginning of 2000, STMicroelectronics started technical cooperation with Gridspertise through Gridspertise's shareholder Enel (Italian national power company). Today, Gridspertise has deployed more than 65 million smart meters using STMicroelectronics Power Line Communication (PLC) technology in Spain, Eastern Europe and Latin America. In addition, Gridspertise integrated STMicroelectronics' latest PLC system chip in the smart meter developed for Italy to provide a near real-time secure communication channel for household devices, namely Chain 2 technology. Now, Gridspertise and STMicroelectronics are preparing to extend Chain 2 to Gridspertise's latest energy metering solution for the US and other regional markets.

Chain 2 technology increases end customer awareness of power consumption and self-generation. This technology enables operators to develop a number of new value-added services and simplify electricity management through home automation technology. Chain 2 technology encourages all players to play a more active role in the transformation of the energy market and advances the market penetration of distributed renewable energy. For example, the technology allows tailor-made power usage recommendations to end customers based on real-time power generation data from customer-owned power generation systems, such as photovoltaic panels. The technology also enables smart meters to collect real-time data on the electricity usage of appliances used, for example, to adjust the charging power of electric vehicle charging stations based on the available power capacity and other electricity needs in the house.

In addition, Gridspertise and STMicroelectronics are collaborating in several other areas. In addition to collaborating on the ANSI C communication standard for the US market, the two companies will introduce the latest DLMS certification standard into Gridspertise smart meters to further enhance interoperability and interchangeability between devices and systems.

Gianni Ceneri, Chief Technology Officer of Gridspertise, said: "Collaboration with other major players in the industry is crucial to accelerate the digitization of the grid and promote the active participation of end users in the energy transition. We are pleased to strengthen our strategic cooperation with ST to share best business practices and develop innovative Solutions, serving an increasing number of markets starting in the US and bringing benefits to new customers, Gridspertise is strengthening its US platform business to better support the growth of grid operators and utilities in the region."

Domenico Arrigo, General Manager of the Industrial and Power Conversion Division of STMicroelectronics' Analog, MEMS and Sensors Division, added: "As Gridspertise drives business growth, ST will continue to develop and provide it with our unique system expertise, specialized technology Support, and ready-to-use solutions based on our advanced semiconductor integration capabilities. As a key technology provider for Gridspertise solutions and services, we are maintaining and strengthening our cooperation with them to create a robust, secure, resilient, and reliable intelligence sustainable grid."

The latest collaboration between Gridspertise and STMicroelectronics is fully in line with Gridspertise's mission to usher in a new era of sustainable and reliable smart grids. The US Federal New Deal has set off a wave of investment in energy transformation and grid modernization, and cooperation in this context can be described as timely. Together, STMicroelectronics and Gridspertise will enable the market penetration of new types of flexible, distributed and sustainable energy, and enable end customers to actively participate in the energy transition through the increasing digitization of the grid.

Both companies have operations in the United States and work directly with technology companies, grid operators, policymakers and regulators to accelerate the future development of the region's electricity markets.
