Infineon introduces new 2 x 37 W audio amplifier family with 2nd generation MERUS multilevel switching technology

When designing battery-powered portable audio devices for consumer speaker applications, it is critical to maximize battery life and provide excellent sound quality while achieving a compact form factor and reducing system cost. The new IC series includes two models, MA2304DNS and MA2304PNS. Among them, MA2304DNS integrates a fully configurable digital signal processor (DSP), and MA2304PNS has a built-in audio controller with volume control function. Both devices feature second-generation multilevel switching Class-D audio amplifiers that operate inductor-free and provide a bridge-tied load (BTL) rated output of 2 x 37 W. Its supply voltage range (PVDD) is 10 to 20 V, which can provide high-fidelity sound quality. With its own five-segment voltage modulation, the idle power consumption is as low as 52 mW, so there is no need for complex dynamic track tracking systems. With idle power consumption one-fifth that of conventional Class-D audio amplifiers, the devices are ideal for battery-powered speaker applications, extending battery life and reducing battery unit cost.


The efficiency of the new IC series can reach more than 80% at low output power, which enables multi-channel products to have longer battery life and improve thermal management capabilities. The multilevel switching design relaxes the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements and enables non-inductive applications over the full power range at a lower cost. Compared with traditional two-stage and three-stage Class-D audio amplifiers, the new IC series accelerates time-to-market by reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI) without compromising audio quality and system efficiency. This lower and tunable EMI enables industrial designs in mains-powered multi-channel applications that would otherwise require heat sinks or traditional LC filters.


A high-order internal feedback loop ensures excellent audio performance with low total harmonic distortion (THD) and noise floor. Inductorless applications help to achieve minimal output filtering, avoiding the bulkiness of large inductors, which in turn reduces system cost without limiting output power. The highly configurable DSP integrated in the MA2304DNS can adjust the audio to make the sound quality more perfect, and adjust the actual speaker application through equalization, limiting and similar functions. The MA2304PNS provides simpler volume control functions and audio controllers for systems utilizing an application processor or a connection processor for audio processing.
